Bent TV highlights benefits of lung cancer screening for LGBTQ+ people

  1. News & stories

A new episode of Bent TV has highlighted the It’s Good to Know campaign, exploring the importance of lung cancer screening for LGBTQ+ communities and the role of inclusion and equity in healthcare.

Hosted by Ricki Spencer who starred in the campaign, the episode also featured campaign talent and radiology nurse, Ron Jolley, alongside screening participant Liz Dods and Scott Walsberger from ACON, a partner in the It’s Good to Know campaign.

In this thoughtful discussion, the guests explore why culturally safe, inclusive healthcare matters - and how barriers such as stigma and fear of judgement can prevent people from accessing life-saving screening. The conversation highlights that the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is designed to be supportive and non-judgemental, meeting people where they are.

Importantly, the episode busts a common myth about lung cancer screening: you don’t have to quit smoking to have the scan. The panel emphasises that the NLCSP is about prevention and early detection, not blame - and that everyone deserves access to respectful, affirming healthcare.

Through LGBTQ+ voices and lived experience, this Bent TV episode reinforces a core message of It’s Good to Know: lung cancer screening is for everyone who is eligible, and inclusion is essential to improving health outcomes.
